This page contains resources for using Circle Decodables to provide Circle Tutoring sessions to children.

The Circle Tutor Routine

To complete a tutoring session, follow these steps.

1. Teach the Target Sound-Spelling: Review the “Target Sound-Spelling” shown on the inside front cover of the book. Use the link below to open the Letter Sound Cards for the set you need.
2. Review Letter Sound Cards: Review all the Letter Sound cards in the set. Review Letter Sound cards from earlier sets that need more review.
3. Teach the High-Frequency Words for the book: Review the new “High-Frequency Words” shown on the inside front cover of the book. Use the link below to open the High-Frequency Word Cards for the set you need.
4. Review High-Frequency Words: Review all the High-Frequency Word cards in the set. Review High-Frequency Word cards from earlier sets that need more review.
5. Teach the Other Words for the book: Review the “Other Words” shown on the inside front cover of the book. Use a whiteboard to write and review the words. Keep the words written on the whiteboard to reference during reading.
6. Introduce the Guiding Question: Choose a Guiding Question from the inside front cover of the book and review it.
7. Read the book: Have the child read the book. Remember to correct errors.
8. Answer the Guiding Question: Talk about the answer to the Guiding Question.
9. Discuss additional comprehension questions and vocabulary: Choose one of the additional comprehension questions from the back cover of the book to discuss. Locate the vocabulary words listed and briefly discuss their meaning.
10. Reread the book: If you have time, have the child read the book again.

Placement Test

On this task, the child will read groups of words. As the child reads the words, you will score on your score sheet.

• For words the child reads correctly you will mark a check.
• For words the child reads incorrectly you will mark an X.

Do not provide any type of feedback, but if the child makes an error and then corrects themselves on their own, the word is scored correct. You should ask the child to pause or slow down if you need more time to score.

Follow these instructions when giving the Placement Test.

1. Position the child across from you or to your side so they can’t see you score.
2. Click the arrow to go to the first group of words.
3. Place the device in front of the student.
4. If the child misses any word in a group, two groups in a row, ask the child to stop and give the device back to you.
5. To start, say: I’m going to show you groups of words, and I want you to read them to me. You can click to the next group of words when you are ready. I’ll tell you when to stop.
