What Are Decodable Books?
Decodable books are written so children can read most of the words using the phonics skills they have already learned. Traditional books are wonderful for reading aloud to children, but are not designed for beginning readers to read on their own. This is because they include many words children cannot yet sound out. Decodable books limit words with unfamiliar phonics patterns so children can rely on decoding. This allows them to practice sounding out words, build confidence, and strengthen the skills needed for independent reading. Over time, these skills become the foundation for enjoying all types of books.
